Read: 2 Kings 6:8-23
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” (2 Kings 6:16 NLT)
Violet lifted her head from her food and looked around, big green eyes searching for danger. I stroked the small kitty’s soft grey and white fur, offering reassurance. I knew why she was nervous. Lily, a big tabby, was nearby—I could hear her slow, stalking footsteps. She harbored a distinct dislike for Violet and often chased her. Violet would come out on the short end of the stick if she engaged in a fight so she always fled in fear from Lily. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell my little friend that as long as I was by her side, I would protect her from bullies—human or animal.
In 2 Kings 6, the servant of the prophet Elijah was terrified when he saw the Aramean army surrounding the city of Dothan, ready to capture his master. Elijah asked God to open the eyes of the fearful young man who was then able to see the armies of the Lord all around them. (vs. 17)
When we feel we are in danger, it’s too easy to see only the threat before us. Like Violet the cat, we can succumb to the temptation to give up and flee in fear. We forget that our infinitely greater and stronger God has promised to be always by our side, fighting any bullies for us. Satan himself must flee at the mention of our Savior’s name. If we ask him, the Lord will open our eyes to his loving, protecting presence in the midst of our hard times.
PRAYER: Lord, help us remember that you powerful presence is always with us no matter how hard our situation.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: God is greater than our greatest fears and our most impossible circumstances.
