On April 16th, 2018 the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed the Down Syndrome Protection Act! This is a victory for those with Down Syndrome and for human rights and the welfare of our nation.

Mahatma Gandhi once said that a nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members. By that criteria, the greatness of some western nations is in sad decline. The legalized killing of disabled children in the womb takes societies back into the Dark Ages.

This trend to destroy those with DS bears a frightening resemblance to the treatment and murder of the disabled in Hitler’s Germany.  He too wanted to eliminate the “flawed” so that he could have his perfect Aryan race. Remember that those who don’t learn from the mistakes (or crimes) of the past are doomed to repeat them.

Some countries, like Iceland, Denmark, and France brag they have “eradicated” DS as if it were a disease like smallpox or tuberculosis. What needs eradication instead is the evil, ignorance, and fear in the human heart. We each need to grasp and experience the truth that every human being is intrinsically valuable and worthy of unconditional love based on being created in the image of God. And parents with an unborn baby diagnosed with DS or other disabilities need to be educated and supported.

Those who have Down Syndrome or other challenges, deserve to be born and to enjoy and contribute to life right alongside the rest of us.
